·     When getting ready, always ensure your handmade jewellery is the last to go on. The chemicals used to manufacture make-up, perfume and hairspray may damage the finish of the metals and stones. Just think jewellery is the finishing touch to any outfit.

·     This may sound basic, but always remember to take off your jewellery before showering or cleaning, soap will leave a dull film and certain cleaning products will tarnish the metals.

·     Avoid wearing jewellery when in the swimming pool or hot-tubs as chlorine could cause permanent tarnishing.

·     There are a number of home jewellery cleaning kits available to purchase but please ensure you read the instructions as some of these kits are not suitable for certain metal types and pearls. A soft chamois cloth and a little love an attention is an effective and inexpensive way of cleaning your jewellery and giving your pieces back their shine.

·     When buying hand-made jewellery don’t be afraid to ask the designer on their recommended cleaning methods for the piece of jewellery you are purchasing. Good designers will be knowledgeable on the properties of the materials and will love that you plan to take care of their work.

Storing

·     Store your jewellery in soft cloth pouches or wraps or plastic zip lock bags.

·     Chains should be lied flat to avoid kinks.

·     Why not purchase an earring stand to ensure all your earrings are kept in pairs.
